Long-established local provider Open Arms Care is one such organisation that has shape-shifted.
In March they joined LiveBetter Community Services to deliver disability services in both the Bellingen and Nambucca Shires.
They also applied for $25,000 from the Federal Government under the Building Better Regions Fund Infrastructure Scheme to install a ceiling and air conditioning at their Railway St premises in Nambucca Heads.
Today (Wednesday) the upgrade was unveiled with the Member of Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker doing the honours.
LiveBetter CEO Tim Curran said it was a happy moment shared with NDIS participants, their families and staff.
“We really want to acknowledge the work and the legacy of Open Arms Care,” Mr Curran said.
“LiveBetter is here to support our NDIS clients in Nambucca plus we are also in Bowraville (with Nambucca Valley Phoenix) and in Macksville.
“We offer a whole range of Active Participation Programs including drama, art, cooking and skills acquisition activities, such as vocational training.”
He said while the NDIS was already making a profound difference in many lives, LiveBetter was aware of teething problems and was active in calling them out.
“The NDIS is a huge social reform and there are some flaws in both the design and the pace with which it has been rolled out.
“There have also been challenges as State Governments step away from what is now a Federal scheme … some gaps have appeared, in mental health in particular.”
He said LiveBetter was working “feverishly to overcome the problems”.
On the other hand he emphasised the massive boon the scheme has been for regional economies in terms of employment.
“Previously Open Arms Care employed 40 people, that has now grown to 75 … the majority of those jobs are disability support workers but there are also many associated therapy roles.”
