More than 300 students from seven Mid North Coast schools used World Ocean Day last month as an opportunity to learn more about the Gumbaynggirr culture and the ocean’s central place in it.

The day was an outstanding success, with students from Scotts Head Public School, Medlow Public School, Stuarts Point Public School, Toormina High School, Bellingen High School participating in the day. The students undertook a series of activities including local Indigenous calendar art, dance, didge, language and weaving.
The day was supported by the Unkya Local Aboriginal Land Council, Scotts Head Public School, NSW Health’s Go4Fun children’s healthy lifestyle program, Ready Mob anti-smoking program and the Third Space Mob. The day is registered with World Oceans Day, a global celebration of the ocean with hundreds of events around the world, observed by UN member states.
