The chocolates this week go to Bill Cook and Dave Gladman. The boys launched at Shelley Beach, Sunday and kept fishing through lousy conditions for a dozen snapper and pearl perch.

They fished off Albany and north off Valla in 25 metres for two fish and as conditions worsened they moved into 15 metres off Valla Resort and plonked onto fish. Dave said the turn of the tide might have been the spark to bring them on the chew.
Myself and Noel Ingold were also on the water Sunday and did very well targeting rock cod and sergeant baker. Perry McNally with his all-girl crew were just outside of us and Maz managed to pull a single pearl perch out of all the rubbish species. We hung around in 20-odd metres just off the surf club and hoped that the overcast skies might bring the snapper in to the close reefs. We had plenty of berley in the water but it just didn’t happen for us. Water temps are still well into the 20s, which didn’t help.
There are reports of a few bream starting to show up on the beaches, as are tailor and the odd salmon. One bloke I spoke to said he hooked onto half a dozen bream up to 30cms off Grassy Head beach using mullet strips. I also heard two nice jewies were taken off the end of the North Wall at the southern end of Grassy Head beach. I took a drive along this beach recently and the many gutters looked so “fishy”. Once the water temperature gets below that 20 degree mark, I reckon they will fire.
If you are chasing a feed of fresh fish, my advise is to check in with the local bait and tackle shop, these guys have their finger on the pulse and are happy to share that all important, ‘local knowledge’.
