The team was made up of Emily Costa, Grace Notley, Miia Angel, Ruby Kennedy, Isabella Stone, Zahlee MacDonald, Olivia Welsh, Emily Stuart, Ruby Flanders, Pippa Nugent and Ciara Payne and was coached by Miss Holman.
The girls qualified for this event by winning their pool at the zone carnival in March, and so faced off against the 11 other pool winners on the North Coast.
The girls won their first pool game against South West Rocks Public School comfortably and then came up against Tacking Point Public School from Port Macquarie. Tacking Point was a strong side, and St Patrick’s had to show grit and determination to hold on for a 14-13 win at full time.
This placed them at the top of their pool and straight into the quarter-finals.
The St Patrick’s team just kept getting better. They played a convincing quarter-final against Tuncurry Public School, winning 18-8. This placed them in the semi-finals against a tough team from Holy Name Primary School in Forster. With scores level at half-time, St Patrick’s applied full court pressure in the second half and sweet shooting from Zahlee MacDonald and Pippa Nugent saw them win this game 15-10.
The grand final was played against St Joseph’s Primary School, Taree. They were a very good team who managed to score five goals in the opening minutes before St Pat’s even got on the board.
St Patrick’s were unable to breach this gap in the first half and were trailing 7-2 at the break. The girls were not disheartened and came out firing in the second half. Suspense rose as they managed to lock scores at 12-all with two minutes to go.
Unfortunately, St Joseph’s scored the last two goals of the game and came away winners 14-12.
Special thanks to Tamsyn Spear who umpired for St Patrick’s on the day.
