It became his passion, among others, and after stints as Deputy Captain and Senior Deputy, he was elected Brigade Captain in 2013.
Steve passed suddenly on Monday, June 11. He was 61.
His popularity is clear by the amount of words that have flowed in honour of this man, whose other great loves were his family, fishing and friends.
He is repeatedly described as having been smart and cheeky with a wicked sense of humour and a ‘can do’ attitude.
A very experienced firefighter, his leadership skills were admired by his colleagues, as was his gentle way of helping others learn from their mistakes.
Under his enthusiastic guidance, the Eungai Brigade has become one of the most active in the zone.
A measure of the man:
“At around 3am on the morning of the launch of his fishing book, we were called to a B-Double roll over on the Pacific Highway at Barraganyatti. Steve had to leave mid-morning to prepare for the launch … he returned to the accident site about an hour beforehand with snacks and drinks for brigade members.
His passion for fishing saw Stephen publish Fishing from Sydney to Brisbane in 2017. The book was the result of over fifty years of experience from this passionate angler who had to learn his skills the hard way.
Stephen leaves a wife and two children, countless friends and family.
He will be sorely missed in so many ways, large and small, by many.
Hooroo Flocko!
