Last week was an odd one for blue water fishos. The westerlies pushed the waves back and there is now a channel past the ‘peg’ to exit Shelley Beach for even the bigger boats, and the mid-week warriors took advantage of the conditions.

I heard John Gooch had an early week afternoon fish just off the Wellington Rock bait grounds for six reds and another crew used the cloud cover on Monday for a feed of snapper in 16 meters of water off Valla.
Ray Fogg and Billy Watts fished Thursday from 16 meters out to 70 meters and stops in between for a grand total of two snapper. Foggy reckons the conditions were just too good, gin-clear water, no ruffles on the surface and a slow-dropping barometer had the fish off the chew, even though they were showing on the sounder.
Peter Neaves was outside of them in 80 metres, east of the ‘South Mountain’ and had leather jacket and big pearl perch to four kilograms in the tub by mid morning.
Dave Gladman with Bill Cook on board as deckie also fished Thursday for a lone snapper and three sergeant baker. Dave said they stayed in shallow water around Albany Reef and berlied heavily but couldn’t attract a scale to the boat.
Come Friday and it all changed. Brian Hall and deckie Rob fished the 35 meter ‘Red Coral’ grounds for five tusk fish and a dozen, better than plate sized snapper. With the westerly pushing pretty hard, Brian said they employed both sea socks to have a slow drift through his favoured piece of reef. Hally said the fish didn’t come onto the bite until 10.30, just on the tide change.
Perry and Maz Mc Nally were also out on Friday and from talk on the chatter channel, they also had a good feed in the tub.
Club activities
Off the water and club activities are starting to heat up. Members are asked to help out at the Bello Cup at the Bowraville Race Track on Saturday morning, June 30. As we have done before, we will be setting up from 9.30am to sell tickets in our giant seafood raffle. Ring me on 04074 55378 for more info.
The Friday night seafood raffle at the Nambucca Bowlo is on fire with Team Bill Watts setting a new benchmark over the Ken Howard weekend. Gives us something to chase. Funds raised in this raffle will assist with our upcoming ‘Kids for Fishing Day’ and the Frank Partridge Primary School’s fishing day for disadvantaged pupils. Our members will also throw their collective weight behind the Nadoc week activities at Frank Partridge School.
Membership fees are due for 2018/2019 season at the end of June. Please see Rob at the Boatshed Bait and Tackle at the bottom of the Nambucca Heads RSL car park for payment. Fees have remained the same.
July competition
The July competition is the start of our 2018/2019 season. The prize vouchers have increased in value and the weighmaster has devised a few $50 mystery prizes to spice up the comp. The club will continue with length rather than weight to determine the winners. This is to encourage catch and release for those bigger breeding females. Photos on brag mats showing date and length will be accepted by the weigh master.
Next competition is July 7 and 8.
