Josh Frydenberg, Minister for Environment and Energy, has ordered power companies to tell customers about better deals if the plan they are currently on is unfavourable.
Mr Hartsuyker said many people remained unaware that they might make big savings on their power bills simply by shopping around, or just by quizzing their existing provider.
He said the difference between being on a standard contract with a retailer, often called a “standing offer,” and packages under deals labelled “market” offers could be as high as $500 a year.
“Power is like any other retail commodity,” Mr Hartsuyker said,
“We all know that different shops often have different prices. We know to shop around and go for the bargains at the supermarket.
“Not enough people are doing it when it comes to electricity but they should, and this latest move will alert more people to the fact that it could well be worth it.”
Mr Hartsuyker urged anybody dissatisfied with their power bill to go to the Government’s Energy Made Easy website to get tips on how to “shop” for electricity.
