Wanting to put an emphasis on the creative arts this year, the tiny school’s P&C fundraised to employ Bowraville artist Nelli Gallop to come and create a mural.
Principal Sarah Landers said the initiative put the students at the centre of the creative process, designing and painting the mural plus a half hour art lesson every Monday.
“The mural emphasises Aboriginal culture, the environment and connecting the children to their place in the Nambucca Valley,” Sarah said.
“It’s very hands on and they are loving it.
“We only have 10 kids here from six families, so its been a wonderful effort by the P&C to raise the funds for this.”
Nelli said endangered species were the theme of the mural “and as it happens there are lots up here”.
“We are just at Stage One, the blocking in stage, but already the kids are engaged. It’s really endearing hearing them say things like ‘look at my phascogale’.”
Nelli’s mural talents are becoming noticed around the valley and beyond – watch this space for more news soon!
