There was commotion at the ocean yesterday.
Police were called to the usually idyllic Shelly Beach at Nambucca Heads just before 3pm after a report came in of a car taking a dip in the water.
Police said the vehicle rolled down the boat ramp after its 73-year-old owner failed to engage the handbrake.
The car then floated approximately six metres offshore as concerned onlookers waded in to help the man.
The car was eventually retrieved by local Fire and Rescue personnel before being towed from the scene.

The man was issued with an infringement notice for not securing his vehicle properly.
A huge thankyou to Micheal Gregory and Jay Walsh who submitted this incredible coverage of the unfolding drama through the Guardian News Facebook page.
