Paul O’Neill reports – round 4 of pennants saw the 4s travel up to Urunga and once again found the opposition a tad too strong, going down 38-69 ( 0-10 ). The ever improving Grade 6 side hosted Port Panthers and it was Graham Allen's side who finally opened up their account with a deserved draw. The other two sides just missing to go down 49-65 ( 0.5-9.5 ). This weekend the 4s will take on Sawtell at home and the 6s make the trip down to South West Rocks.
Social bowls is on again this arvo, names in by 12.30 for a 1 o’clock start and a chance at great prizes including the cash jackpot. Also, many thanks to the Port Macquarie travelling bowlers for their visit last Sunday on what was a terrific day of action on the green. Go Bowra!
Macksville Men
Doug Smith reports – the Thursday jackpot bowls winners were determined by the best winning margin which went to Brian Nunn, Brent Liddell and Malcolm Duffy from Albert, Col Fraser and Gary Witte. There were no jackpot winners so this week the jackpot is $71.
Round 4 Pennants results: Grade 6 Macksville defeated Kempsey Heights 66/46 and 9/1 on points. Grade 7 Macksville defeated Nambucca Heads 89/29 taking the points 10/0. This week’s draw Grade 6 Macksville play Port Panthers at home and Grade 7 play Park Beach at Park Beach.
On Sunday John Steel played in the Zone 14 Champion of Club Championships, having a bye in the first round. He played D Valentine from Woolgoolga in round 2, winning a tight game of bowls 31/29. John will now play Cullem Murray from Port City in round 3.
Nambucca Heads Women
Pat Smith reports – winners of Tuesday Social Bowls were Alma Reid, Corrin Nouws and Arlene Duffus.
Results Thursday Triples Championships: Hermi Frank, Yani and Brynie Brownley def Kerry Dale, Gemma DeNatale and Bev Jones.
Results Saturday: Michelle Fredericks, Arlene Duffus and Pat Smith defeated Corrin Nouws, Manor Smith and Pat Fletcher 22 shots to 11.
Coming events: Tuesday May 29, Charity Day, all saleable items gratefully accepted. Come and make this a successful day for the Nambucca Valley Cancer Support Group.
Nambucca Heads Men
Fred Pope reports – lats Wednesday’s Club Selected Triples attracted a field of 36 bowlers. The $10 winners were Dennis Graham, Mark Blackford and Doug Ceddelland. .Second place winners were Cliff Ross, Don Lean and Owen Smith. Third place $5 winners were Garry Mitchell, Ray Long and Geoff Hartmann. Lucky losers’ prize went to Bill Miernik, Danny Curren and Joe Franck. The $15 lucky bowler was Barry Redman. The $30 jackpot was won. Sharing with Barry were Jinx, Bob Sutton,Wayne Bennett, John Hunt and Terry Harvey.
Friday’s Nominated Men’s Triples attracted 66 bowlers. The $15 first prize winners were Roger McGuigan, Dave Ogilvy and Kev Lill. The $10 prize winners were Bill Watts, Ken Summerville and Peter Meehan. The third place $5 winners were John McCollum, Bob Sutton and Ray Hunt. The lucky losers were Ian Blain, Frank Wesley and Laurie Summers. The lucky bowler was Ray Hunt. The jackpot of $60 was not won.
Leans Newsagency Sunday Bowls was contested by 24 bowlers. Winners were Corinne Novana, Cec Smith and Yani Mitchell. Runners-up were Michelle Fredericks, Jim Sinclair and Peter Fredericks. Encouragement went to Mark Sinclair.
Pennants results. Grade 3 Grant Lawrence won 28/6. Rhys Riddell won 27/20 and Tony Urquhart won 24/12. Overall 79/38. A terrific result.
Grade 5. Mick Ellison won 15/12, Ray Manser lost 15/32 and Neil Pollard lost 18/19. Overall 48/63.
Grade 7 against Macksville. Fred Pope lost 7/30, Brett Stephens lost 11/27 and Joe Franck lost 11/32. Overall 29/89. Better luck at home boys.
Scotts Heads Men
Gary Bishop reports – the two semi-finals of the Minor Singles have been run and won. P Bishop prevailed over H Petersen while G Dallwitz managed to stay on top of P Kemp. Gary and Peter now face each other in the final.
H Aladjadjian, 2018 Club Champion, represented the club in the Champion of Club Champions competition run by Bowls NSW. It was held at Stuarts Point last Saturday. With 14 byes and only two games in the first round, H drew a game against Corey Daley from Park Beach. Corey got the drop early, H fought back, but Corey retained his lead.
On Saturday, we hosted Nambucca in the fourth round of the pennants and we managed to turn our fortunes around with a 10-0 win.
On Sunday, we held our annual Mixed Pairs carnival with bowlers attending from all over our zone. A team from Nambucca, N Pollard and B Jones took the major prize with a composite team from Stuarts Point and Urunga taking out second. A great day, on great greens, with perfect weather. We were pleased to host our major sponsors, carpet Court of Macksville who presented the winning prize.
The Nambucca Valley Over 50s next meeting is at Nambucca Heads on Monday June 4 – names in by Friday June 1. Rink winners for Wednesday May 16 were P Bishop and P Martin with B Scrivener and G Dallwitz taking out the consolation prize.
Urunga Women
Pat Chapman reports – in spite of a slow start Elaine Cameron, Ros Hancock, Faye Puckeridge and Lorraine Carlon continued their excellent form to take out the major fours championship for 2018 when they defeated Colleen Katen, Sylvia Mitchell, Sally Welsh and Robyn Adams. Elaine's team had a slow start, failing to score for the first five ends, but by the 13th end they had levelled the score and from that stage they all played impressive bowls, winning the match 27 to 20.
It has been an interesting week for Urunga bowlers when the district pairs semi-finals were played at Urunga last Tuesday with Brenda Fane/Shirley Willis and Elaine Cameron/Lorraine Carlon advancing to this stage. Both teams played great bowls but unfortunately each lost by one shot on their final ends.
The draw for the major triples is now on the board with the first matches to be played Thursday May 24. Nominations for the O'Callaghan Cup close on June 5 with play on June 12.
Bowlers are urged to consider nominating for committee positions for 2018/2019 which are now open and close on May 31. The elections will be held on July 5.

Julee Townsend reports – a stableford was held on Saturday. Winner K Wilson, runner-up J Conslaves. Front nine G Brooks, back nine G Patterson. Nearest to the pins 2/11 J Townsend, 8/17 D Hooper. Longest to the pin 4/13 G Patterson, 7/16 M Oldham. Balls: D Hopper, J Armes, P LeCerf and P Mulveena.
Macksville Women
Rhonda McAuliffe reports – another perfect day for golf at Macksville, we managed to cheat winter once again. Mary Dwyer continues her amazing form to win another day including the monthly medal and putting competition with 79 nett.
Desma Hughes held her own coming in with 81 nett to claim runner-up. Christine Parker won the ball with 84 nett and the NTP.
Macksville Men
DWK Bricklaying sponsored a single stableford event at Macksville on Saturday.
Many players were heard questioning the difficulty of some of the pin placements. Clive Friedman (19 handicap) survived the difficulties to win the day with 38 points.
Murray Dryburgh (27) was the next best with 37 points.
Brian Brabant (18) recorded the best front nine score of 20 points and Ken Hong (26) collected 21 points over the back nine to win that prize.
Nearest the pins on the 4/13th resulted in Brian Burns in A Grade and no other grade hit the target. Other nearest the pins went to: A Grade Brad Fortescue, B Grade Mike Parker and Shane Langley took out C Grade.
This Saturday's event will be a twoball best ball sponsored by the Nambucca Hotel.
Mid North Coast Veterans
Colin Cutt reports – on Tuesday, May 15, 81 golfers competed at Coffs Harbour Golf Course, which was in excellent condition.
Grade 1 winner: Stephen Arnold 38, 1st runner-up John Currie 36, 2nd runner-up John Fortescue 35 c/b, 3rd runner-up Bruce Wallace 35.
Grade 2 winner: Nevyl Farrar 36, 1st runner-up Ray Lopez 34 c/b, 2nd runner-up Colin Dunne 34, 3rd runner-up Neville Haworth 33.
NTPs: 12th Chris Ryland, 15th Bob Everitt, 22nd Mike Jensen, 26th John Fortescue.
Nambucca Heads Women
Jen Forne reports – last Wednesday’s single stableford had 33 starters in two grades played in almost perfect conditions. Winner of A Grade was Ann Antcliff with 34 points. Runner-up Jennifer Johnston 31 and B Grade winner was Gwen Maxwell with 31 points on a countback from Pattie Hoschke.
Nearest the pins on the 5th were A Grade Henny Oldenhove, B Grade Leanne Welsh and C Grade Marie Newell. The pizza on the 13th was won by Henny Oldenhove and the 18th pro pin won by Nicole Purser.
