Rather, if the 11-year-old Brazillian jiu jitsu (BJJ) athlete gets you in a triangle hold it’s likely to end in good night, Irene.
The Scotts Head Public School product took out both the kids Gi and No Gi submission-only divisions at the Coffs Harbour Invitational competition.
Winning five out of six fights via submission was enough to claim both divisions.
Jace told the Guardian his favourite submission holds were “the triangles” – a chokehold – though most of his victories at Coffs came on the back of arm-bars.
Jace had been training with both his dad, Troy, in Scotts Head, and Zac Hughes at Valla BJJ in the lead up to the competition.
The result at Coffs Harbour is a step towards the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) National Titles in Sydney at the end of this month.
A yellow belt, Jace has been practising BJJ for nearly six years and has won many events in Queensland, including the East Coast Australian title.
2018 looms as a breakout year as Jace is also eyeing the Pan Pacific Championships in Melbourne.
Also a keen surfer, Jace encourages other youngsters to try Brazilian jiu jitsu or the ‘gentle art’ as it is known.
