The tournament included the Foursomes Senior Amateur Championships on the Monday, with 78 players taking part. Coming out on top were two very good golfers in Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath) and Ken Brewer (Concord) after they put together a score of 71 points. Scratch runners up were Terry Small and Steve Puskaric from the Kogarah club with 74 to get the countback result.
Nett winners from the Liverpool club were Anthony Brown and Graham Lawrence with a round of 70 points. Winners of the over 65 years went to Robert Angus (Cumberland) and Ian Smith (Forster Tuncurry) with an 82 on countback. Geoff Vial (Forster Tuncurry) had a hole-in-one on the 5th.
A field of 140 contested the Seniors Championships with conditions very good for the first two rounds be fore rain on the Thursday delayed the start by 90 minutes.
Playing in the seeded group at the back of the field and only just beating a storm in, was Lester Petersen (Bardwell Valley) after rounds of 71, 65 and 74, for a winning total of 210. Lester’s round on the Wednesday is a new course record 65. Now Lester has won just about every amateur championship that he can get his hands on. Chasing him home and also in the seeded group were Matthew Taylor (Stonecutters Ridge) and Ken Brewer (Concord), both finishing on 213, Matthew having the better countback.
Other scores worthy of note: Mario La Chiusa (Nudgee) 220, helping his score was an eagle two on the hardest hole, the 16th, on the Wednesday. Brad Dowling (Southport) also finished on 220. Gordon Claney had 221, and Graham Howland (Dunheved) had 224 as did John Rixon (Lismore).
Over the week the average score turned out to be 81.51 from something like 436 rounds that produced 359 birdies and 2944 pars, along with numerous bogeys and doubles. There were two holes-in-one and two eagles on the two most difficult holes – at 9 and 16.
On the Tuesday night all enjoyed a dinner at the club with ‘catch up’ being the main interest as these players are all involved with the sport and chasing the elusive dream of one day beating the course. Thanks to Nambucca Shire Council and Geoff King Motors for their support of this prestigious event.
Over Easter, The Island will host a 36-hole event sponsored by Macksville Caltex owners Ray and Rhonda Rowe. Up for grabs will be the Easter Bowl, so popular some years ago. Plenty of spaces in the field remain available.
Golf will also be available on Good Friday.
