Mum, Dad and six young kids were soaking up the beautiful weather at the V-Wall on Sunday at around 2.30pm when they realised that their bag with wallets, phones, keys and other valuables was no longer under the clump of trees where they had left it.
“Our whole lives were in that bag – this has cost me upwards of $1000 so far,” the father, who wishes to remain anonymous, said.
“And the worst bit is they’ve got all our details.
“The thing is, I don’t expect to get our stuff back. I accept that I stupidly took my eyes off the bag, and now bear some of the responsibility.
But if I can prevent this from happening to someone else then at least something good may come out of it.
He was out at the V-Wall on Monday armed with a warning for anyone being too complacent.
“And if I didn’t have to go back to work I’d be down there every day warning people,” he said.
One of the V-Wall visitors he spoke to on Monday recounted a similar incident that happened to her just before Christmas.
“But she saw the guy and chased him down and got her bag back. I don’t think she reported the incident to the police,” he said.
The Local Area Command said they had only received the one recent report of theft in the area.
He would like to advise any other victims to come forward and report the information to the police.
“If they get away with it more than once then they become emboldened,” he said.
The family say they are still traumatised from the incident and hope noone else has to go through what they have.
