Harriet’s Gourmet Provisions owner Mary Lawler said Christmas and holiday trade had been good with no real drop-off following the opening of the bypass.
“People from Scotts Head have been coming into town … that hasn’t happened for years! They normally stay away because of the traffic jams,” Mary said.
“I am feeling really positive about it – I mean, really, who wouldn’t want to come here, we live in paradise.”
Mandy O’Grady from the Nambucca River Department Store said Christmas trade had been excellent.
“There is a really good vibe and a lot more holiday makers,” Mandy said.
“We had been feeling concerned but it’s been great and people are much more relaxed without all the traffic.”
Down the road at the Macskville Newsagency, Joe Welsh was all smiles saying it had been the best Christmas ever for him in the 14 years he had been there.
“People, visitors, are stopping and coming in because they can – there are no traffic jams and they can park,” Joe said.
Mitre 10’s Jason Southwell said business was as busy as ever but it was a bit early to assess any real effect of the bypass.
“So far there have been no adverse effects … it is certainly much quieter and parking is easier, we are really happy,” Jason said.”
The final word however must go to Gail Horsfall, who retired to Macksville from Newcastle with her husband in September last year.
“I grew up in the area and having just returned I can really see the difference,” Gail said.
“Parking is so much easier, people are more relaxed, everyone is so friendly – we love it here. And a lot of our city friends are curious and keen too.
“It is the perfect overnight stop halfway between Newcastle and Brisbane.”
