With the mercury sitting at 30 degrees in the shade, droves headed to the riverside parks and beaches to catch the sea breeze and celebrate with family and friends.
It was almost a case of ‘spot the local’ as tourists far outnumbered the residents at Bellwood Park. And some had come from a long way away – even Esperance in WA.
Nearby at the V-Wall, finding a carpark was harder than keeping to a New Year resolution – with vehicles banked bumper deep on both sides of the roadway.
Out on the water was where it was at – as people swam, fished and splashed – and while the Guardian was out and about we even caught on camera Marine Rescue at the ready to help two people in a kayak who got caught in the current and otherwise were bound for New Zealand.
