The National Visitor Survey (NVS), out this week, shows more Australians are flocking to holiday on the North Coast and they’re spending more.
Local MP Luke Hartsuyker has welcomed the tourism boom, saying it’s great news for local businesses.
“More travellers coming to the North Coast means a boost for our local economy, and more local jobs are created and supported,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
The NVS shows almost 5.2 million Australian tourists visited the North Coast, staying over 20 million nights and spending $2.977 billion in the year to September 2017.
The NVS follows the strong tourism growth shown in the International Visitor Survey (IVS), released earlier this month, which revealed 344,000 international tourists visited the North Coast, staying 3.7 million nights and spending $228 million over the same period.
A combined total of 5.54 million tourists visited the North Coast, staying 24 million nights and spending over $3.2 billion.
Mr Hartsuyker said North Coast locals should be proud.
“The North Coast is drawing tourists in droves with its stunning locations and great tourism operators,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“It’s great news on a national scale as well, with overnight trips by Australians growing by seven per cent to a record 96 million and the number of nights stayed up by six per cent to a record 347 million.”
“The Coalition Government continues to invest in regional areas and the tourism sector by addressing key infrastructure needs and market priorities.”
