July 6: Bin chicken, trash vulture, tip turkey: the Australian white ibis is the protected species Aussies love to hate. The foul fowl have just chalked up another reason to be loathed as Macksville’s Dawkins Park lake gets the thumbs down in water quality tests. The sheer number of ibis populating the island and pooing in the lake is overpowering the ability of pumps to turn the water over. The ibis will be surveyed after the breeding season ends to see if the nest and egg removal has worked.
