Health Promotion coordinator Trish Davis said on average, Australians gain 0.8 to 1.5kg over the Christmas period.
“One to two kilograms might not sound like much but researchers have identified that weight gained over the holiday period is often kept on permanently,” Ms Davis said.
MNCLHD’s Health Promotion team suggests the following ideas to help you avoid gaining weight over the holiday season:
• Avoid going to a party hungry. Eat something light before the party to reduce your chances of snacking on high calorie party food. Healthy snacks may include a 200g tub of reduced fat yoghurt, a bowl of cereal or a cheese and tomato sandwich.
• Watch your portion sizes. If you are inclined to finish everything in front of you, use an entrée sized plate instead of a dinner plate.
• Fill up with foods from the five core food groups, including vegetables and legumes, fruit, grain foods, dairy and meat.
• When hosting a party or celebration, choose healthy party foods to serve such as vegetable sticks, pretzels, rice crackers, hummus, beetroot, tzatziki or avocado dip, sushi, sandwiches, quiches and fruit salad with yoghurt.
Exercise can be a great way to enjoy family time and avoid weight gain during the festive season. Try some of the following ideas to help you stay fit over the holidays:
• Give active gifts as Christmas presents – a tennis racquet, boogie board, balls.
• Children love it when you play with them. Try outdoor cricket, bike riding or swimming.
• Set yourself an exercise challenge for the New Year.
