The Australia magpie has swooped up the title of Aussie Bird of the Year for 2017 after the results of the BirdLife Australia poll were revealed on Dec 11. The spring-time swoopers won the top title after securing 19,926 votes of the total 149,848 votes the nation-wide poll received. The Australian white ibis came in second and the laughing kookaburra arrived in third place. The Mid North Coast is no stranger to run-ins with magpies with one incident in Port Macquarie where a territorial magpie left one resident bleeding.
