Emergency services were called to Camden Haven River, north of Forster, about 1.45pm after a boat capsized while returning from sea.
Two men were rescued from the water but a third man could not be found and a search commenced.
The body of a 59-year-old man was located in the river a short time later.
Local police together with the Marine Area Command are investigating the incident.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
