INCREASING the number of referees in the senior ranks will be the main aim for the newly elected president of the East Coast Dolphins Rugby League Region, Wayne Bridge from Wingham.

Bridge won a ballot for the position at the region’s annual meeting at Coffs Harbour, beating the incumbent, Brian Rix from Lismore. This will be Bridge’s second term as president.

East Coast takes in the Group 2, Group 3 and Northern Rivers Rugby League competitions.

“We need more referees in our senior competitions,’’ Bridge said.

“That’s a major worry in Groups 2 and 3.’’

Bridge said referee associations in both competitions have strong numbers. However, the majority only control junior fixtures.

"We have to provide a pathway for the referees to progress from doing junior game to seniors,’’ he explained.

Bridge will also be on the Country Rugby League board, which will mean travelling to Sydney for meetings.

He’s looking forward to the regional role and the added responsibilities it entails. Bridge is also chairman of Group 3 Rugby League.
