The new stretch of Pacific Highway between Port Macquarie and Kundabung was officially opened to traffic on November 17 and bypasses a notorious stretch of road which saw multiple fatalities and serious accidents over the years.

It was described as a mighty day for the Mid North Coast.

Nicole Osborne posted on the Port News Facebook page writing: ‘I travel to Kempsey from Port and I feel much safer now and the trip is just easy. Can't wait for the final part to open.’

The full multi-billion dollar Pacific Highway upgrade is expected to be completed in 2020.

Others were sceptical about the time of the opening and questioning why all aspects were not complete and why the speed limit was not yet 110 km per hour.

The Maritime Services confirmed that the speed limit on the first 18 kilometres of the 23 km Oxley Highway to Kundabung Pacific Highway upgrade is currently 100 km per hour. 

“Finishing work is expected to be completed early next month, weather permitting. The speed limit will then be increased to 110 km per hour,” a Maritime Services spokesperson added.

In relation to the remaining five kilometre section between Haydons Wharf Road and Barrys Creek – it is expected to open early next year, weather permitting.

Until then, a contraflow arrangement will be in place on this section of the highway and an 80 km/h speed limit for the safety of workers and motorists.
