A dozen houses around Seaview and Blue Gum Streets have been burgled since Wednesday.

Local police are pursuing a couple of men believed to be responsible for a string of break and enters in Nambucca Heads over the past two nights.

Six police crews with torches patrolled the area around Seaview and Blue Gum Streets into the early morning on the lookout for the men who have entered and stolen items from a dozen residences since Wednesday.

The men are believed to be in their late teens or early twenties.

Officers chased the men on foot last night after a couple of residents spotted them scaling their back fence.

The men fled into nearby bushland where they successfully avoided capture.

Mid North Coast Local Area Command’s Detective Inspector Guy Flaherty is urging residents to be vigilant in locking up downstairs if they are watching television upstairs, for instance, after a number of victims reported that they were present in the house when the break-ins occurred.

“I just want to state for the record that none of the offences have resulted in a physical confrontation,” Det. Insp. Flaherty said.

These have been crimes of opportunity, and the offenders have been targeting areas where people are asleep or in other areas within the house.

“Sometimes they have cut through fly screens on sliding doors and windows and entered that way.

“People with back decks that are easily accessible from outside should take precautions.

“In each case they’ve been stealing purses, cash and credit cards.”

Police are ramping up efforts to catch the offenders with a dog squad and extra police on hand tonight.
