At the time she was “doing it all”, juggling the many facets of running a small business alongside her passion for youth work, learning and sharing mindfulness and compassionate communication practices.
“My diagnosis was a catalyst to end 14 years in the graphic design and printing business and concentrate on the areas in my life in which I met my need for contributing to my own healing, and the healing of others,” Abbey said.
“My focus is on the practices of presence, empathy, appreciation, connection and ease, for which I created the acronym PEACE.
“I was already doing qigong daily and had a solid practice in meditation and non-violent communication. I have been actively building on these practices ever since, working on cultivating what I call a ‘state of thriving’, rather than a state of fear/survival which living with cancer so often brings with it.”
Now, thanks to the Nambucca Valley Cancer Support Group, Abbey, who lives at Valla, is sharing some of her key PEACE Practices for healing with people in the Valley who have a cancer diagnosis.
The group has invited Abbey to present six 90-minute stand alone ‘foundational’ sessions on ‘Mindful Relaxation’.
“I have experienced the ways in which my own sense of happiness and well-being has greatly benefited from these ‘foundational’ PEACE practices and I want to help others to experience the healing power of mindful relaxation.
“My hope is that these practices will help people understand how they can gently shift their attention from fear-based thoughts and feelings to new thoughts which bring a sense of trust and appreciation for where the good is to be experienced in their life.
“It’s an opportunity to practice stepping out of the exhausting state of ‘survival’ and enjoy the energy that comes from being in a state of PEACE.”
The P.E.A.C.E for Healing Mindful Relaxation sessions will be held between 11am and 12.30pm on Tuesdays, starting on September 26, at the Nambucca Valley Cancer Resource Centre, corner Boundary St and Pacific Hwy, Macksville.
