But then the rains came, with eight non starters due to the showers and about 30 pulling out due to the wet.
Those hitting off early received the best of conditions and got around the course with little interruption. Making the most of it in A grade David Bird playing off 12 handicap put together a round of 35 stableford points to come out on top. Graham Weary (12 handicap) was just behind with a round of 34 points.
In B grade Jim Barrie (16) got his game together with a little bit of luck and came in with a score of 36. Visiting from Toukley, Alan Harris (14) put together a round of 33 to be runner-up. In C grade John Slade (21) found his mojo to put together a score of 36 to win the grade from Gary Tierney (24) on 33 points. Others to escape most of the rain and record good rounds were Col Wormleaton 33, as did Paul Ryan, Roy Louis, Andrew Johnston, and David Orr (Coffs) along with Phil Frost.
Ball rundown went to 30 points with nine players to collect and these are Garry Roach, Rob Coneybear, Jason Belt, David Rosser, Dale Hanson, Noel Gaddes, Kerry McCoy, Ed Beaton, Michael Harmer and Steve Doherty.
Nearest the pins: Michael Bennett, Dave Rosser, Graham Weary, Bruce Berry, and the winner of the money shot was Allan O’Brien.
Thursday’s round saw 77 hit off and for a welcome change there was a little bit of run on the course. Staying in the warmer climate Denis Myers (14) from Tocumwal had a round of 39 to get the main voucher from Rod Robertson (12) also on 39. Denis having the better countback. For Division 2, Gary Tierney (25) put together a round of 38 stableford points and took out the voucher from Roger Bale (21) 35 points.
Others to show some form: Kerry McCoy, Mark Cooney, Alan Cockburn, Urpo Ylinen and Harry Parnell all had rounds of 34. Ball run down went to 32 with only the one to collect and that was John Slade.
Nearest the pins went to Alan Cockburn, Deidre Byrne at 5, John Hopkins at 7, Rhonda Rowe at 8, Darren Keys took out the pizza hole, Dan Meere the 13th with Bryan Ussher taking out the money shot.
On Sunday a good field played in the 4BBB medley event with Urpo Ylinen and Marie Newell putting together a round of 45 points to win.
Next to take out a voucher was Michael Brazel and Jodi Murdoch after a round of 42. Trevor Peck and Glenys Thompson had a round of 41 points with Jennifer and Andrew Johnston along with Chris and Garnie O’Brien having a score of 40 points.
Pins went to Geoff and Jan Harris, Andrew Johnston and Jodi Murdoch.
