Rain affects Australia v New Zealand game in ICC Champions Trophy

Arch rivals Australia and New Zealand were forced to take one point apiece in their opening clash in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Poor weather intervened at Edgbaston Oval in England as the 50-over contest was cut short.

New Zealand appeared on track for victory, despite rain causing delays during the team’s innings.

A century from captain Kane Williamson helped New Zealand score a competitive total of 291 runs.

A quick fire innings by opener Luke Ronchi (65 from 43 balls) set the tone early, while Ross Taylor (46) also spent valuable time at the crease.

Paceman Josh Hazlewood was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with 6/52 from nine overs.

Following more rain, Australia was set a revised target of 235 runs from 33 overs.

The Aussies were struggling at 3/53 off nine overs when play was abandoned.

Opener Dave Warner and Moises Henriques top scored with 18 runs apiece.

Adam Milne took 2/9 for New Zealand.

Australia will play Bangladesh in its next Champions Trophy game on June 5 at The Oval.
