In 1997 three active and adventurous ladies: Ruby, Gwen and Heather decided to form a walking group.
They had already been walking together for several years. So some leaflets were designed and hand delivered around Stuarts Point and Yarrahappinni. Local papers and shop windows were used for informing the community of the walking program.
On May 7 1997 a crowd of 30 people (aged in their early 50s to their late 70s) gathered with their dogs for the first of many successful and enjoyable walks through forests and along beaches. The ‘Yarrahappinni Walkers Group’ quickly became a popular social activity.
The walking group is now a member of the Heart Foundation organisation, with walkers required to complete registrations and logs. Banners and shirts have been provided for the leaders by the Foundation and photos and articles can be included in their monthly magazine.
The Yarrahappinni Walkers Group promotes healthy living through gentle exercise. The walks are diverse with a great variety of scenery, destinations and flora and fauna. The group brings people together to enjoy a healthy, interesting social activity.
People of any age are invited to join the group. (There are several in the 80+ age group). Walk the whole route or as far as you are capable of, walking at your own speed.
Walks are held twice a week - Thursdays and Sundays starting at 8am.
