Captains Steve and Petra Dorman are looking forward to meeting you on May 28

IN the four years since Salvation Army Captains Steve and Petra Dorman arrived in the Nambucca Valley, they have noticed a notable rise in people coming to them for help with financial emergencies.

“More people are coming for help with overdue bills or emergencies like the car needing urgent repairs,” Capt Steve said.

“We also seem to get quite a few homeless people landing here and we help them with transport to get to larger centres where there is family or the services to help them.”

Capt Petra said anecdotally more women were coming to seek refuge from domestic violence, however she did not know the numbers.

But this help can only be offered if the funds are there.

Sunday, May 28 is the biggest event on the Salvos calendar to that end – the Red Shield Doorknock Day.

“People have always been so generous here in the Valley, we have always met our goals … but what we need are more volunteers to get out and knock,” Capt Steve said.

Volunteers can either register by phoning 137258 or online at or leave their details at the Salvation Army’s Family Store in River St, Macksville.

Alternatively, you can just show up at the Nambucca St entrance behind Mitre 10 between 9-10am on Sunday morning to sign-up.

Efforts are rewarded with a hot lunch, a Maccas voucher and a certificate … not to mention that special warm-hearted feeling.

And if you can’t spare the time, you can make a donation online or post a cheque to PO Box 9888 in your capital city.
