At last week’s Nambucca Shire Council meeting in a notice of motion she explained the town was classified RV friendly in the past however criteria changes saw its qualification lapse.
Cr Hoban said one of the criteria was the availability of low-cost (or free) overnight parking close to the CBD.
“Lions Park, Ferry Street, Macksville has been a popular overnight destination for recreational vehicles for many years and prior to 2011 overnight parking was not prohibited,” Cr Hoban said.
“However, the signs presently erected there prohibit overnight stays.”
She asked about the cost of changing some of the signs to indicate that recreational vehicles were permitted to park overnight in certain locations.
The Assistant General Manager, Engineering, Paul Gallagher, said another sign would cost about $230 and two would be needed.
“About $500 would rectify this – we would leave the other signs there as they prohibit camping,” Mr Gallagher said.
Cr Anne Smyth said it was a good initiative.
“These people don’t want to be in caravan parks,” Cr Smyth said.
“We are halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and people get tired – they do it anyway, so we may as well let them know it is OK.”
The motion was passed with Cr Brian Finlayson voting against it on the grounds it was unfavourable competition for the caravan parks.
The lure of the RV Friendly status is that it links the town to the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA), the largest RV Club in the southern hemisphere, with 66,000 members.
