WITH great reluctance, the Nambucca Strikers Football Club this morning decided to pull the pin on this year’s Challenge Cup which was set to get underway later today and run through to Sunday.
A forecast of heavy, widespread rain across the catchment over the weekend left the organisers with little option but to abandon the tournament, which was due to celebrate it’s 39th year.
It is a great shame as the number of teams entered for the pre-season carnival was at a high, with sides nominating from far and wide, including Sydney, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Bellingen, Urunga and on the Northern Tablelands.
As late as yesterday afternoon, and with clearing skies, the Strikers were hopeful the tournament would go ahead at the Coronation Park complex at Nambucca Heads.
But a damning assessment of a building weather system forced a recant.
“We have had to make the decision this morning to call off the Challenge Cup,” Strikers president Paul Cue said.
“The weather reports are absolutely terrible with a 100 per cent chance of significant rain coming our way.
“The fields have only just recovered from the last amount of rain and it's predicted to be the same or worse so with that in mind I think it is safe to say that the tournament would be unplayable.”
