The organisation promotes healthy interaction, and a feeling of belonging to those in our community who are often the most isolated and vulnerable.
“The DSA is a great organisation that helps people with a disability get out there and have a go at surfing – no matter what their challenge in life,” Member for Cowper and longtime association supporter Luke Hartsuyker said.
“It’s when you get out into the surf and see the smiles on the faces of all those involved that you really appreciate what the organisation means to participants.
“It’s great to see so many volunteers on the day which was all about the participants getting in, having a go and especially having fun.
“I am especially proud to be involved with the Mid North Coast branch.”
Mr Hartsuyker said he remembers it was only a few years ago when all the club had was an empty trailer.
“… but along with that there was also a lot of determination to make the club work,” he said.
“Now it boasts five beach wheelchairs worth $5000 each that help severely disabled participants get to the shoreline, and an entire suite of boards, rashies and everything needed to help participants enjoy a day in the surf.
“I am happy to say its success has led to a new DSA branch being established in Port Macquarie to service the Macleay Valley area.
“I commend all the DSA volunteers for their hard work and successful fundraising efforts that have helped grow this club from strength to strength.”
