Reduced traffic volumes, combined with safety and finishing work completed on this section of road, now known as Giinagay Way, has improved the road environment.
Opening the new Nambucca Heads to Urunga upgrade has also significantly reduced the number of vehicles using the old Pacific Highway, including a large number of heavy vehicles.
While the upgrade was being built the speed limit for most of the old highway was reduced to an 80km/h work zone.
A speed zone review recommended a number of changes which will be implemented this month including a 100kph speed limit from north of Nambucca Heads interchange to south of Valla Beach Rd at Valla Beach.
A 90km/h speed limit will be introduced from south of Valla Beach Rd to south of Ballards Road, north of Valla Beach and an 80kph speed limit will be implemented from south of Ballards Rd to the existing 50kph speed limit within the township of Urunga. Speed zones between Urunga to Raleigh remain unchanged.
The speed zone review was carried out in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines and in consultation with local council.
The speed limits which will soon be implemented balance road safety with the need for travel efficiency and amenity.
Improvements to Giinagay Way mean it is safer to enter and exit the road and motorists are better protected from roadside hazards.
Signs will start to be installed from February 13, with the new speed limits enforced from then.
