A BEACH which 99 per cent of Australians have never heard of has been named the nation’s best – and hot on its heels is Shelly Beach at Nambucca Heads.

Not that Shelly Beach is unknown – but it has been ranked at No.8 in a list of the best beaches of Australia which will be released this morning by respected judge Brad Farmer and Senator Fiona Nash, representing the Prime Minister.

The long awaited results of exhaustive research and a comprehensive review into every Australian beach - all 11,671 of them – are to be detailed at a special ceremony at Bondi Beach this morning. The research also reveals how Australians and big spending international visitors now wish to engage with our coastal environs.

A small strip of sand on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia has been freshly minted ‘Cossies Beach’ in honour of Sir Peter Cosgrove – and it has won the No.1 position.

Commenting on Cocos (Keeling) Islands grabbing the top spot Mr Farmer said, “I named this little slice of paradise after Sir Peter Cosgrove, who like me – and even naturalist Charles Darwin – was impressed by its absolute natural beauty.”

Darwin, who examined the beach in 1836, said: “I can hardly explain the reason, but there is to my mind much grandeur in the view of the outer shores of these lagoon-islands.”
