As soon as Nambucca Shire mayor Rhonda Hoban cut the ribbon (stretched between two bikes) to open stage three of the project, the pedallers were off, including four-year-old Thomas Williams, who had only recently shed his trainer wheels.
Prizes were given to six best-dressed bikes with catering by the Nambucca Evening VIEW Club and the Lions Club.
VIEW club member Bev Kirkby said her group raised $200 for their Smith Family Learn for Life students.
The new bike path section stretches 1.2km, ending at Kingsworth Estate, and was made possible thanks to a $650,000 grant from Roads and Maritime Services.
The council also received $7880 from Transport NSW for the opening, which was part of Bike Week.
Volunteers who helped out on the day were Nambucca Bicycle Users’ Group (Nambug) riders and the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA).
Council is now looking for funding to continue the cycleway further south.
