About a dozen fire fighting appliances are on Dorrigo Mountain fighting a bushfire that began this morning when a car travelling up Waterfall Way caught fire.
RFS Mid North Coast Fire Control Centre said Waterfall Way is closed and helicopters are water bombing the fire.
They are hoping to be able to open one lane for traffic shortly.
It's been reported that the male driver escaped unharmed.
The RFS Fires Near Me app indicated a five hectare bushfire out of control on Waterfall Way at 9.40am but this was subsequently updated to one hectare.
Waterfall Way is closed at Dorrigo Mountain in both directions due to the fire between Summervilles Rd and Maynards Plains Rd.
Motorists are advised to avoid Waterfall Way or delay travel through the area.
Emergency services and council crews are at the scene.
Motorists can use the Oxley Highway and Pacific Highway or Armidale Rd and the Pacific Highway as an alternative route.
Motorists should also exercise care and drive to the conditions as smoke in the area may affect visibility.
