Temperatures reached record levels in a number of locations including Kempsey with the mercury reaching 39 on Sunday. The previous September record was 37, set on September 25, 2002.
Many other regions topped their predictions for Sunday with some sweltering temperatures recorded.

The heat and high winds coupled with the prolonged dry period proved challenging for the Mid Coast NSW RFS. They provided this update on Monday afternoon (September 25):
Innes View Road, Innes View (still going)
At 1pm on Sunday, NSW RFS received calls to a fire in the vicinity of Innes
View Road, Innes View, approximately 8 km west of Comboyne.
One hundred firefighters, 30 appliances and three water bombing aircraft were tasked to bring the fire under
control.
The fire remains uncontained and has burnt over 1000 ha. Two homes and three sheds were
impacted by fire late yesterday afternoon.
Belbora Creek Road (being controlled)
At 11.30 pm on Saturday crews responded to a fire at Belbora Creek
Road, Belbora, 20 km south west of Wingham.
The fire is burning in an easterly direction and
is currently being controlled.
The fire has burnt 163 hectares.
Nowendoc Road (being controlled)
At 2.10 pm on Sunday crews responded to a fire at Nowendoc Road,
Mount George, 35 km north west of Wingham.
Crews will continue to work throughout the day
to contain the fire. The fire has burnt 50 hectares. A vehicle, shed and container was impacted by fire.
Afflecks Road (being controlled)
At 5.30 pm on Saturday crews responded to a bush fire at Affleks Road,
Tipperary, RFS crews are currently working to bring the fire under control.
The fire has burnt 210 hectares.
