A SMALLISH field of 86 played a Fourball Best Ball event in windy conditions that did not make the day all that pleasant for many at The Island Golf Course on Saturday.

However showing no signs of the conditions, Ian and Dennis Aston put together a combined score of 49 points to win the day. Coming home in the runners-up spot was the unlikely pair of Dave Rosser and Michael Summerill with a score of 46 points. The second runners-up were Lee Fewings and Richard Trevena with 45 points, but alas the lolly jar was empty for these two due to the small field.
Ball rundown went to 42 points with four pairs to collect, these being Ron Lapin and Eddy Penrose, Noel Gaddes and John Starr, Jason Belt and Phil Mander, with David Ogilvy and Chris Thorndike picking up the last two.
Taking out the nearest the pins at the 3rd (Sladies hole) David Ogilvy, Rod Robertson the 5th, Trevor Hopkins at the 7th, Chris Thorndike at 8, Jason Belt took out the pizza hole at 13, as well as the money shot at the 18th. John Nebauer took out Stu’s ball at the 15th.
Thursday’s round of medley stableford with 80 starters was taken out by Daryl Hadfield (12 handicap) from Belmont with a round of 40 points which was enough to get the division 1 voucher. Following Daryl was Col Wormleaton (11) with 38 points (must be going through a purple patch at present as Col has received a voucher over the last couple of weeks). Taking out division 2, Roy Fox (27) from Hervey Bay 40 points. Then came Ron Lapin (28) close by with 38 points (well done to Ron who is finding the going easier after his retirement). Col Dunne was a little unlucky in the countback with his round of 38.
Ball rundown went to 31 with Peter Bush, David Bird, Phil Mander, Urpo Ylinen, and Peter Delaney all to collect. Nearest the pins for the day went to John Forbes on 3, Don Atkinson on 5, Geoff Wilson at 7, Andrew Donavon at 8, Col Wormleaton the pizza at 13, Mark Cooney at 15, and Alan Cockburn will be able to buy extras for the new house after taking out the money shot at 18.
On Sunday a small field played in the Bernie Dugdale sponsored American Foursomes event with the O'Briens Christine and Garnie the best pairing with a round of 70.3. The rest of the field found the going very hard given the strong wind.
A sad loss to the club this last week was the passing of Keith Messervy. Keith had spent many hours down on the course and around the clubhouse looking after what ever needed to be done. Unfortunately over the past few years ill-health robbed Keith of his passion of working for the golf club. Our sympathies and thoughts go out to the family, and may he rest in peace.
