There are apps for last minute bookings for flights, holidays and hotel rooms, and from today there’ll be an app for last minute Majestic cinema tickets too.

In a move that’s hoping to put more bums on seats, Choovie will offer discounted rates on last minute session tickets across all Majestic cinemas.

Believed to be a world-first, Choovie was developed by a Melbourne couple and was rolled out in selected Melbourne cinemas in February this year.

The app is free to download and there is no fee for becoming a member. Users can still purchase discounted tickets as ‘guests’ through the app and website without becoming a member.

Once a ticket is purchased, a QR code is sent which can be scanned straight from a smart phone, bypassing the need for paper tickets.

The app is the result of some pretty damning research by the couple which found the average cinema seat occupancy to be around 16 per cent, or one in every six seats.

Billed as being ‘like Uber but for movies’ the app is currently offering tickets for tonight’s Nambucca Heads sessions at $9.40, almost $7 cheaper than a full-priced ticket.

The app will continually adjust prices based on demand; the less demand for the session, the lower the ticket price will be on Choovie.

While the Majestic Cinema Club member ticket price is generally still the cheapest option, the app doesn’t charge the usual $1.50 booking fee that Majestic online ticket purchases incur.

Choovie Co-Founders Sonya Stephen and Shane Thatcher said they were thrilled Majestic Group had joined the platform.

“With more than 80 per cent of cinema seats unoccupied, we see Choovie as a genuine win-win – movie fans get to see more movies, more often, and cinemas see more bums on seats and more money in the till.”

Economist by training and CEO of Choovie, Shane said: “For every one per cent increase in utilised cinema capacity, more than $50m flows into the industry, and this is even before candy sales.”

CEO of the Majestic Group, Kieren Dell, said the entire team was delighted to bring Choovie to their cinemas.

“We saw Choovie as a fantastic way to get more bums on seats,” Kieren said.

“What a great opportunity to encourage more people to visit the cinema more often.”

Choovie is offering a promotion to encourage new users. If you buy a ticket through Choovie in August for one of the Majestic Cinemas, you will get your next ticket free.

Cinemagoers will be able to purchase tickets for as little as $7 through the Choovie app (which is available free in the Apple App Store and Google Play) or via the website at www.choovie.com.au.
