The Rural Fire Service brigade attended the lookout, which is close to the Bowling and Recreation Club, to extinguish the fire.
“Council repaired the fire damage at the lookout on July 11 but it was further vandalised with another fire on July 24. The entire structure now requires major repairs including new bearer and joists as well as the walking surface,” council’s assistant general manager Engineering Services, Paul Gallagher said
“Fires were also set within the public toilets near the beach at about the same time.”
Mayor Rhonda Hoban was also similarly far from impressed: “Council has received many compliments on the works undertaken in the shire’s coastal areas, and this senseless, disgusting act of vandalism hurts all residents and ratepayers as the shire has to use its very limited funds to repair the damage.
“The cost of the vandalism was somewhere around $3500 to $4000, a cost that our community should not be burdened to pay.
“There is a reward of up to $5000 for information leading to a conviction of the vandal or vandals responsible for the damage.”
Anyone with information as to the identity of the vandals should report that information to the police or council.
