Local historian Clyde Piggott told the Guardian that Assistant Commissioner Worboys’ mother, Shirley Smith, previously lived in West St, Nambucca Heads and was his first cousin.
“Her mother, my aunt Emily, was a well-respected dressmaker for the town,” Clyde said.
“The family left here just after the war. The boat builder, John Campbell Stuart, was their grandfather … Stuarts Island and Stuarts Point are named after him.”
Assistant commissioner Jeff Loy is another new deputy; he will take responsibility of metropolitan field operations, while Mr Worboys will be in charge of regional field operations.
“I wish him well … it’s another feather in the cap for old Nambuccera, as my father used to say,” Clyde said.
Mr Worboys was previously in charge of the southern region.
The pair will join Catherine Burn and Dave Hudson as deputies in Mr Fuller's restructure of the top brass.
