WITH a number of North Coast Football matches scuppered by closed grounds, much interest centred on the top of the table clash between the undefeated Woolgoolga and the second-placed Nambucca Strikers senior men’s third division battle.
And an arm wrestle it was at Woopi. The hosts dominated the early stages against the Strikers, but resolute, scrambling defence denied the home side a score. As the Strikers grew in belief, they had the better of the last 20 of the half, and should have goaled only for the cannon shot to be sniper-like at the keeper.
Nil-all at half-time and momentum was with the visitors.
But the break didn’t seem to do Nambucca any favours as Woopi slotted two easy goals in quick time on the resumption, and added their third late after an unusually poor clearance from the back.
The Strikers carried plenty of injuries into this fixture, but Woopi deserved the win, had a number of regulars absent, and for the most part looked more likely.
One thing is for sure – these two sides will figure in the finals.
And the pace of this game!
