Nambucca Shire Council’s General Manager, Michael Coulter, said the turf was apparently rolled up ready for removal when the alarm was raised.
“The turf had only been laid that day!” Mr Coulter said.
The floating pontoon is part of a riverbank beautification project which includes improvements to the existing jetty (stage) plus access stairs.
Mr Coulter said the council received $60,000 under the RMS’ Boating Now program for the work and contributed in-kind and cash support.
“Rotary was also a partner to this project providing cash and significant in-kind/ labour to support to the project,” he said.
“Council’s Environmental Levy has contributed to the area by undertaking bank stabilisation from the bridge to mangroves at the western end of the site.
“The Macksville foreshore has been slowly consumed by the Nambucca River and the council received relevant permits to reclaim the foreshore at River Street and implement contemporary stabilisation techniques including use of marine grade geofabric which was missing from historical works completed in the area.”
He said Rotary received funding in respect to the passive craft (canoes and kayaks) launching area, which is made out of geofabric sand filled bags.
Some other facilities such park benches and shading will also be placed in the area.
In relation to the riverbank restoration, Mr Coulter said the significance of the space for public use had seen staff working closely with local contractors to select and place rocks to provide greater function, amenity and habitat than might normally be the case with rocks placed on the riverbank.
