Bourhan Hraichi appeared in the Port Macquarie Local Court via video link from Goulburn's maximum security facility on February 23.
The lawyer for Hraichi said on February 23 there has been a new charge added to the case.
The new charge is cause with intent to murder.
The prosecutor said the case had a lengthy history due to a number of legal changes.
Hraichie last appeared at Kempsey Local Court on February 6 via audio visual link, charged with causing grievous bodily harm and intentionally choking his 40-year-old fellow inmate in April 2016.
During the incident Hraichi allegedly carved ‘E4E' - reportedly a slogan favoured by extremist group Islamic State meaning "eye for an eye” - into the man's forehead.
Hraichie was moved to Goulburn’s maximum security facility after the incident.
The lawyer of Hraichi on February 23 sought a committal hearing from Deputy Chief Magistrate O'Brien to provide her client with more time to look over CCTV footage, statements and facts which he had not yet seen.
Deputy Chief Magistrate O'Brien said there will be a committal hearing on March 9.
He said he would allow Hraichi more time to review the facts of the case due to the serious nature of the fresh charge.
Bail was not applied for and refused.
