The river is full of small chopper tailor, the likes of which I have never seen.
While they can damage your gear these little chopper tailor have a few things going for them ... they are just the right size for a whole host of predators to snack on. Jewfish, jacks, trevally and flathead all love a little chopper.
- Boatshed Crew
Everywhere you go, throughout the lower half of the river, there are masses of little tailor around 20cm and smaller.
As you can imagine they will make short work of light leaders and soft plastic lures so fishing around them can be a costly exercise.
While they can damage your gear these little chopper tailor have a few things going for them.
They are just the right size for a whole host of predators to snack on – jewfish, jacks, trevally and flathead all love a little chopper.
The problem with that is you cannot actually use a tailor for bait unless it is of legal size, so fishing around them is the best bet. But like I said can be costly.
That is unless you do it right.
Fishing with plastics is pointless as they will get chewed up every cast.
So changing the lure to a hard bodied vibe or minnow will stop the toothy attacks of the tailor and hopefully last long enough to attract the attention of a bigger predator.
Keep an eye on your sounder, keep mobile and fish right on the bottom – that way you can’t go wrong.
By the way, the Samaki Vibelicious is by far the go to lure in this situation.
As far as I am concerned nothing else comes close.

Meanwhile, the warm summer water has finally found its way here – and with that should come an increase in pelagic fish. The RAN's meteorology branch reports that the average coastal sea surface temperatures off the Coffs Coast have been below average this month.
