MORE than just a round of golf, the annual Elly Stig Memorial Day is the event which kicks off the Valley’s sporting calendar each year.

And each year, hundreds of golfing enthusiasts, amateurs and those who don’t know anything about the sport come and participate, throwing their support behind the worthy cause.
Although the field of 165 was slightly down on the number of players seen teeing off in previous years, the sum raised in no way reflected that slump.
Organiser Ray Stig said around $14,000 was raised on Sunday, bringing the 23-year cumulative tally, donated to the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia, to close to $385,000.
“What can I say … I never thought it would go for this long,” he said.
“But jeez I love it … it’s close to all of our hearts (the Stig clan) and every single year the Nambucca Valley gets behind us.”
Participants in the best dressed competition were few and far between, there were no ninja turtles, smurfs or superheroes in sight, however a number of teams donned bright Hawaiian shirts and one group of youngsters dressed in hi-vis tradie wear.
Best dressed was awarded to the boys in pink – Anthony Miles, David Pickvance, Dean Laird and Joseph Newman – who as a team dress in the same threads each year.

After the sporting formalities and awarding of prizes, golfers were joined by prospective buyers in the sports memorabilia auction.
A Cairns holiday package fetched the highest bid, going for $1200, followed by the 25th Anniversary Commemorative gold plated record by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for $650.
A Western Suburbs signed jumper went for $580, and a Phillip Hughes signed photo fetched $500.
Ray said they are already back on deck for next year’s event with planning well underway.
