With this warm air you can expect the water temperature to take quite a jump. Be sure to be out on the water when it does because it can spike all these summer species into gear. The explosion of bait species will be the main catalyst for this.
Some real thumping bass have been caught recently with a few fish going over the magic 50cm mark and some tantalisingly close to the unicorn status of 60cm.
I have noticed with the advent of social media that as anglers we are constantly raising the bar with the quality of fish being caught. I remember only 10 years ago a 50cm bass was the absolute benchmark and the talk of the group for weeks after the capture.
Now the group is nationwide and a 50cm bass barely raises an eyebrow – on social media groups you will see six or 10 a week.
Flathead are the same. Now to get bragging rights it must be a metre-plus. It seems we are catching bigger fish than ever, but in actual fact we are talking about them more.
I have a mate who has been catching some good jacks 50-60cm and I know about it the minute he posts the pictures. Before, it may have taken several weeks for the info to filter out into the general fishing community.
We are also seeing locations exposed. Some guys try to pick the background of your trophy picture then tell everyone within earshot the location.
Are you the sort of person that when a mate posts a picture of a big fish do you instantly get keen to knock him off his high horse? If that picture didn’t get posted would you have had the same passion to get out there?
In a way the competitive nature of humans and fishing is being nudged along by those little inflammatory pictures posted innocently on your wall.
So next time you are out catching some crackers, remember to brag to your mates. It might just shame them into being a better angler ... or take up golf.
