It was Star Hotel versus Taylor’s Arm at the iconic Thistle Park – a ground where the late great hometown hero Phillip Hughes first made his mark – and it was cricket as it should be.
Star were batting, and the way Joe Costa and Darrell Flanders started out, it didn’t look great for anyone else padding up letting alone having a swack.
Jimi Allan bowled with venom for Taylor’s Arm, consistently hitting the tunnel of temptation just outside off-stump, but was changed, spent, as Flanders and Costa became increasingly settled.
The edgy older batsmen for Star looked on with increasing relief while the youngsters remained keen for a hit – though handball on the nearby road beckoned.
