Following the success of her last book, Kakadu Sunset, which was a finalist in a number of online and hard copy awards, she is optimistic about her new book, Daintree.
“This one is set in the Daintree and came out of the exploring my husband and I did up there in 2014,” Annie said.
“We visited Mossman and also Cape Tribulation … I think that is the best sort of research because it makes all the difference to the smell and feel of the book.
“I was looking for a suspense thread for this story and came across information about lucrative smuggling of endangered species and the corruption that goes along with it … it was just what I was looking for.”
Annie also weaves information about traditional bush medicine that she learnt about on her visit.
“The information about the bark treatment and green ants is all true … as is the descriptions of the snakes and their toxicity. The research is half the fun of the book – I always learn so much.”
A final thread that winds around the predictable and popular romance that is at the heart of the story, is the long-term effect of trauma on individuals, including doctors and other health care workers.
Annie is holding a launch of Daintree this Saturday (November 26) at the Nambucca Heads SLSC at 3pm (gold coin entry). Proceeds of entry, raffle and a portion of book sales will go to the club on the day.
She will also be giving a talk at the Nambucca Heads Library on Thursday, December 1 at 10.30am as well as signing books at the Book Warehouse in Coffs Harbour on Saturday, December 3.
