Born in Nigeria, Nambucca-based builder Simon Roomans, brother Richard, friend Raoul and his brother began hitting the waves in Lagos’ Tarkwa Bay back in the ‘80s.

At that time, their presence itself was making waves with the Nigerian kids who watched the guys having a swell time and couldn’t wait to join in.
“It was so cool to see how happy the kids were when they had the chance to play on the boards,” Simon said.
“Back then, when we left to go back to school, we often gave our boards to the kids. Earlier this year when I was back there visiting my dad, the subject of boards, or rather the lack of them, came up with Raoul.
“I decided the time was right to get hold of boards here in Australia and bring them back to set up a surf school in the bay.”
Not long after that Simon’s brother sent him the link to a BBC news story about Godpower Pekipuma and his training program for young people there ... and their need for surf boards.
Simon put the word out and mates Richard Ellis (Coastal Curves) and Rob Coony (Rob Coony Electrical) were quick to front up with a few ‘pre-loved’ boards.
“My plan is to give these boards to either Raoul or this guy, Godpower, and they can be the ‘godfathers’ … someone needs to mentor the kids and care for the boards.
“The bay is the perfect place to learn because the waves aren’t big and it is pretty safe.”
Simon is flying out on November 4 and still has room for a few more boards.
