The piece has also been selected as part of the Wilkins Award, named after William Wilkins, the first head of the Department of Education in New South Wales.
He arrived in Australia in 1851 and for the next 30 years was education’s leading figure, leaving an indelible legacy of vision and quality.
In the early years of the new colony William Wilkins emphasised the value of drawing and visual arts in the education of New South Wales students.
This will mean that her work could be requested by a number of large companies
The collection was named in his honour in 1984. The Department of Education purchases approximately ten new bodies of work from students exhibiting in ArtExpress for the Wilkins Collection.
Being part of the collection also means Mercedes’ work could be requested by a number of large companies to be displayed in their buildings, including the possibility of overseas branch offices.
The school congratulates Mercedes on this honour and wishes her the best for her ongoing success.
